Do you feel like you're stuck in a never-ending cycle of self-doubt?
You're not alone. I know this feeling all too well…
I remember feeling so stuck in self-doubt during menopause. Every time I looked in the mirror, I was reminded of how I was losing my beauty.
It felt like a never-ending cycle of self-judgement and insecurity. Damn mirror!
But one morning as I was putting on my make-up and noticing my deepened wrinkles, a wise voice interrupted my usual narrative.
And it said, “What would love do?”
In that moment, instead of questioning that voice, I let the answer to the question show up.
Brace yourself, this is what showed up…
“What if I embraced the self-doubt? What if I welcomed it instead of fighting it?”
Humm… I allowed myself to sit with that thought.
And then it occurred to me that maybe love wouldn't think of itself first. Love wouldn't be so worried about other people's opinions.
Love would give without expecting anything in return.
So, I acted like a loving person towards myself, no matter how hard it was sometimes…and slowly but surely self-doubt began to lessen its grip on me.
I turned to the mirror, and I started this new ritual of looking at myself with love. With every stroke of my lipstick, I would say “I am beautiful” because that is what self-love does. It says that we are worthy, even with our flaws.
And if someone wanted us or needed us then they wouldn't see those flaws but all the beauty around them.
It has been three years since I first said these words to myself, and now when I look into the mirror, it's not me who sees her faults anymore--it's this wise woman who loves herself so much she accepts everything about her!
This doesn’t mean I don’t do things to look beautiful (I have to admit, I enjoy how I feel after I put on make-up), it does mean the inner critique isn’t so debilitating.
Millimeter shifts add up… one comforting thought at a time 🙂
